Follow On X: https://x.com/PicksOffice Miami enters this matchup riding high after a dominant start, but we've seen this before. The Hurricanes opened last season with similar hype, only to falter when the competition stiffened, and history may repeat itself here. After a blowout win over Florida and a couple of easy victories against Ball State and Florida A&M, the Hurricanes look solid on both sides of the ball. However, their true mettle hasn't been tested, especially in their secondary. USF, with its potent passing game led by quarterback Byrum Brown, has the tools to exploit this. Miami's secondary, while athletic, hasn't faced a serious passing attack this year, and USF could present the first real challenge. Byrum Brown's dual-threat ability adds another wrinkle to this game. His rushing prowess gives the Bulls offense a solid floor, preventing Miami's aggressive pass rush from simply teeing off. USF has been improving steadily, and while their defense is still a work in progress, there have been encouraging signs, particularly with the influx of experienced transfers. The Bulls should be able to at least keep the Hurricanes honest, especially with the motivation that comes from playing a home game against a nationally ranked team. USF’s track record under head coach Alex Golesh shows they can rise to the occasion in these types of matchups, as evidenced by competitive outings against Power 5 teams like Alabama. Another factor working in USF's favor is the market's possible overvaluation of Miami. The Hurricanes' blowout win over Florida looks less impressive after Texas A&M's dismantling of the Gators, and Miami's failure to cover as a heavy favorite is a pattern under Mario Cristobal. His 8-16 ATS record as a 14-plus point favorite is a strong indication that the Hurricanes tend to play down to their competition in such scenarios. USF, playing in front of a raucous home crowd, will likely keep this one closer than expected, particularly with the emotion of a matchup against an in-state powerhouse. Furthermore, teams laying two or more touchdowns in their fourth game have historically struggled to cover, hitting less than 40% of the time. While Miami has the talent to overpower inferior opponents, USF's offensive firepower and an improving defense provide enough of a threat to keep this game competitive. The Bulls might not win outright, but getting 17 points or more in a high-energy home setting gives them significant value in this spot.

Miami Hurricanes 2024 Season Preview

The Miami Hurricanes enter the 2024 season hoping to return to The U of its glory days in Year 3 of the Mario Cristobal era. The Hurricanes are coming off a 7-6 campaign last season and haven’t notched double-digit victories since 2017.

The Hurricanes will kick off the season with a tough test in The Swamp at in-state rival Florida and also hosts bitter foes Florida State and Virginia Tech.

Despite posting a 12-13 overall mark so far, the expectations remain high for Cristobal after the addition of some intriguing pickups in the transfer portal.

The most notable transfer is former Washington State quarterback Cam Ward, who replaces Tyler Van Dyke. The prolific fifth-year quarterback is equally elusive on the ground, with 16 rushing touchdowns.

Oregon State transfer Damien Martinez will be a key offensive figure in the backfield. Martinez was the top-ranked running back in the portal after posting back-to-back First-team All Pac-12 nods.

Defensively, the Canes will have to replace safeties Kam Kitchens and James Williams, both of whom were drafted. However, the secondary should be solid with Dyoni Hill, Daryl Porter Jr. and Mishael Powell.

Freshman All-America defensive end Rueben Bain Jr. figures to be even more terrorizing along the line this season. Middle linebacker Francisco Mauigoa will be a major difference maker in his final college season.

Lou Groza Award semifinalist Andres Borregales is one of the top kickers in the country. Australian punter Dylan Joyce will be a difference maker in the field position battle.

Florida State and Clemson are atop the 2024 ACC Championship odds in the new-look conference that now also includes SMU, Stanford, and Cal. However with a talented cast of returning players and transfers, Miami has the potential to be a dark horse candidate for the conference.

Miami Hurricanes Point Spreads

A spread bet is a bet on a team to win by at least a certain number of points (if favored) or lose by less than a certain number (if underdogs). Here’s an example of one way that could look for Miami.

  • Miami -1.5 (-110)
  • North Carolina +1.5 (-110)

For a Miami spread bet to pay off, it would need to win by at least two points. North Carolina backers, on the other hand, can win if the Tar Heels win or merely lose by one point. All of these are known as “covering the spread.” In the case of a whole number spread, if the favored team wins by that exact amount, bettors on both sides “push” (tie) and get their money back.

Miami Hurricanes Over/Unders

Over/unders (also known as totals) are bets on the combined scoring of both teams in a game. For its game against North Carolina in 2020, the total was set at a whopping 72 points. With the Hurricanes losing, 62-26, the combined 88 points between the teams made this an easy win for the over. Had the game finished with fewer than 72 points between the teams, under bettors would’ve won instead.

Had it been, say, 46-26, or any other score adding up to 72, the bet would have been a push and both bets would have been refunded.

Miami Hurricanes Moneylines

A moneyline, another popular type of bet, is just a straightforward wager on which team will win. Favored teams are given a minus sign before their odds, while underdog teams have a plus sign. This may seem confusing, but let’s give an example using a hypothetical $100 wager.

If the Hurricanes were -200 favorites, a bettor would need to risk $200 for the chance to win $100 if Miami prevailed. If they were +200 underdogs, on the other hand, a $100 bet would give a $200 profit in the event of an upset.

Miami Hurricanes Props

Prop bets are listed in a similar fashion as over/unders, but instead of points scored by the teams, we’re looking for statistics accumulated by a player.

Miami Hurricanes Futures

Futures bets are bets on exactly that: the future. Paid out when the outcome is clear (for example, when the Heisman winner is announced), these bets take place over an entire season.

Some other examples of Hurricanes futures you could bet are the total number of wins on the season, odds to win the ACC, odds to take home the national title, and more.
