Follow On X: https://x.com/PicksOffice Rutgers thrives with a run-first mentality, boasting one of the nation’s best rushing attacks led by standout running back Kyle Monangai. Against Akron last week, Monangai rushed for 208 yards and 3 touchdowns on 27 carries, exemplifying how Rutgers intends to dictate the pace of play. With a veteran offensive line that complements Monangai’s skill set, the Scarlet Knights’ run game is poised to keep them competitive, even against a solid Virginia Tech defense. Virginia Tech’s defense, while experienced and well-equipped to handle the pass with a fierce pass rush and two NFL-caliber corners, has struggled more against the run. Through their first three games, the Hokies have allowed more yards on the ground than through the air, putting them in a vulnerable position against a Rutgers team that will relentlessly run the ball. Rutgers has yet to face Power 5 competition, but their ground attack is legit, and the matchup against Virginia Tech’s run defense could be key in keeping the game close. The Hokies have some offensive firepower of their own, especially with quarterback Kyron Drones completing 63.8% of his passes and running back Bhayshul Tuten leading a rushing attack that averages nearly 191 yards per game. However, while Virginia Tech can score, their defense will need to be nearly perfect to keep Rutgers from controlling time of possession and wearing down the Hokies’ front seven. Virginia Tech has a respectable defense, allowing just 21.7 points and 314 yards per game, but their Achilles' heel against the run makes this a tough matchup. On the defensive side, Rutgers has been stingy, allowing only 12 points per game and holding opponents to just 284 yards per contest. Led by Dariel Djabome with 18 tackles, this defense has shown it can limit the damage, particularly against less dynamic offenses like Virginia Tech. If Rutgers can slow the game down and limit big plays from the Hokies’ passing game, their chances to cover the spread improve significantly. Virginia Tech benefits from home-field advantage at Lane Stadium, where they have won four of their last five games, but the team remains somewhat inconsistent. They’ve struggled to stop the run effectively, which will likely be their undoing against a Rutgers squad that excels in that area. While Virginia Tech’s offense is capable, Rutgers’ ability to grind out drives with their rushing attack could frustrate the Hokies and keep the score within a field goal. Ultimately, taking Rutgers +3.5 feels like a smart play. Their dominance in the run game, combined with Virginia Tech’s struggles to stop the rush, makes Rutgers well-positioned to keep this game close and potentially pull off an upset. Even if the Hokies eke out a win, expect this to be a tight, low-scoring affair, where Rutgers’ physicality in the trenches will help them cover.

2024 San Jose State Spartans Football

The San Jose State Spartans are entering the 2024 football season, coming off a solid 7-6 campaign in 2023, winning six of their last seven. However, SJSU will have their work cut out for this upcoming season as 2023 head coach Brent Brennan moved on after seven successful seasons to the Big 12 to coach Arizona.

The Spartans' new head coach will be a familiar face: Ken Niumatalolo. He was the head coach at Navy for 15 seasons, where he led the Midshipmen to 10 bowl games and won three coach of the year honors in the American Athletic Conference.

Since we've only seen Niumatalolo as head coach at a service academy, it may be tough to project what the Spartans' offense will look like. Niumatalolo deployed a triple-option offense at Annapolis but should be more ambitious with his scheme at SJSU with offensive coordinator Craig Stutzmann.

The quarterback position is a huge question mark heading into the 2024 season. SJSU will have big shoes to fill as 2023 signal caller Chevan Cordeiro graduated. The QB race looks like a three-man contest between Oregon transfer Jay Butterfield, Washington State transfer Emmett Brown, and Walker Eget. Despite losing considerable talent to the portal and graduation, SJSU looks very strong at receiver. The most significant get of this offseason was retaining the leading receiver from the 2023 squad, Nick Nash, who scored eight TDs.

On the defensive side, the Spartans retain Mountain West all-conference performer Soane Toia on the defensive line but lose a handful of transfers. In terms of total defense, San Jose State was among the top 50 in the nation in 2023 and will look to carry over that success under retaining defensive coordinator Derrick Odum.

The overarching message markets send about what they expect from the Spartans this season is a rebuilding one. SJSU has an over/under of 5 wins heading into the season. San Jose State has the tenth-best odds to win the Mountain West at +5000.

San Jose State Spartans Point Spreads

Betting on the Spartans against the spread was one of the most profitable ventures a college football bettor could take on last season. The Spartans finished 8-4 ATS last season. For new bettors who aren't sure what that means, let's break it down:

A SJSU spread might look like this:

  • SJSU +11 (-110)
  • Boise State -11 (-110)

With SJSU losing 35–27 — a margin of only eight points — the Spartans covered the spread while losing the game. Of course, if it had won, that would also have been covered. The favored Broncos would need to win by at least 12 to cover the spread and win.

San Jose State Spartans Over/Unders

Totals bets, also called an over/under, involve betting on how many points will be scored in a game. You can bet on either team or the game as a whole.

Say the total for the SJSU game against Boise State was 52 points. The final score last year ended up 35-27, a remarkably comfortable win for the over. For unders to win, both teams must combine for 51 or fewer points. Whether you bet on team totals or the game total, which team wins doesn't matter — just the amount of scoring.

San Jose State Spartans Moneylines

You might think betting on Spartans' moneylines would be a surefire way to burn through your hard-earned cash, given that moneylines are just bets on who wins a game, but it's more complex. Since San Jose State was an underdog in a number of games last year, books are willing to tag a lower, more appealing price on the SJSU moneyline.

For example, SJSU was a +360 underdog against UNLV, but it won the game, so a $100 bet profited $360. If it had been a -360 favorite, that $100 bet would profit about $28.

San Jose State Spartans Futures

If you want to take the +5000 odds on the Spartans winning the Mountain West in 2024, that's called a futures bet (but I'm not sure we'd recommend that!!). Futures are just what we call any bet on full season outcomes.

Other than conference champion odds, you could bet over or under on the Spartans' number of wins for the season.
